So grab yourself a cup of something hot and let's enjoy the world of fiber arts together!
About me:
My name is Jessica Taylor. I go by Jalyna Rose as an author and pattern creator. I live in Texas on a small farm. My fiber arts journey began when I was a small child and learned to sew by hand. Around the age of nine, I learned to crochet. These skills taught to me by my mother. Although, she has since passed on, her memory is carried through the love of fiber arts that we both shared. My mother didn't sew or crochet a lot, but I do remember all the projects she had made for me. Particularly, the Barney pillow she embroidered when I was a baby. These things from my childhood now lost to time, remain in my memory to remind me of how special fiber crafts really is.
Reader, I do hope that you have similar memories like these. In times of struggle, it is the good memories that get us through and shape us into who we are. Which is why it pains me to reveal that these memories were the only good ones from my childhood. Now you know why fiber art is truly my happy place.
My knitting story:
In 2016, I made an impulsive purchase of a knitting kit from my local dollar store. It had the usual things inside, a ball of cheap acrylic yarn, a pair of plastic knitting needles, a small plastic tapestry needle, and paper instruction for making a hat and scarf set. For the whooping price of $6.99. I took it home and threw these things into my closet and forgot about them. I was curious about knitting sure, but I was always told that it was hard so I was afraid to try. Besides that, I was still in love with crochet and was even trying to make a business of it.
But during the years of 2019 - 2020, a world wide pandemic swept through the nation. In an instant, things were changing. I knew I had to change too. I decided to challenge myself. I would do a year of difficult things. So I went to college by enrolling in a medical coding program. Then I took up knitting. Through a series of Youtube videos, I started my knitting journey. Yes, it was hard at first. As I struggled to do a basic knit stitch, I thought: Does anyone actually enjoy this? I couldn't envision myself loving knitting at all. It was just so different from crochet. I struggled a lot. But by 2021, I had made my first scarf from a pattern and completed the first semester of my college program.
Four years later, I graduated from that college program and now write my own knitting patterns. I still have a long way to go as my year of doing difficult things continues to this day. However, I'm grateful I took the challenge. It has taught me a lot. The best part is I have a degree in a promising career field, healthcare, and a hobby that I now really enjoy. So if you take anything from this, let it be the courage you need to take the challenge of doing something difficult.
